Pearl Harbor Elementary School teacher Janet Chamberlin is the winner of a makeover - of her classroom.

She entered an essay two months ago in the contest sponsored by TREND Enterprises and Education Works that asked new classroom teachers the question,“How will a classroom makeover enhance and support your teaching in the classroom and have a positive impact on student learning?”

“I’m so thrilled,” said an enthusiastic Chamberlin after a surprise assembly in her cafeteria, where she learned she was the grand-prize winner. “I’m still taking it all in. I had no idea why we were going to an assembly.”

Her kindergarten and first-grade special-education students will soon have a new learning environment with $1,000 worth of products from TREND Enterprises. The first-year teacher’s essay said she would like to have certain areas with tactile materials such as blocks and number-lines that can help her students learn better. As part of her prize, the companies will consult with her to see what ideas she has, and they’ll also make their own suggestions on how her vision can be realized. The companies will then go to the classroom and set it all up for her.

Consolation prizes worth $200 also were given at the assembly to Lia Witeck of Mililani Middle School and Sheldon Ormsby of Mililani High School.

“I’ve always loved working with children,“said Chamberlin, who did her student teaching at Pearl Harbor Elementary before she was hired.

“The best part is seeing their faces when something clicks and they know they got it. It’s the best feeling for a teacher.”
