Below are highlights of what’s coming up in West Oahu.

* SCHOOL BREAK Hawaii public schools are on intersession break from Oct. 6 through 10; plus a Teachers Institute Day Oct. 13.

* SWAP MEET Deadline is Oct. 8 to reserve a booth at the Waipio Center’s Community Swap Meet, set for 7:30 to 11:30 a.m. Oct. 18 at the shopping center, where 100 percent of booth fees go to area schools and nonprofits. Foodland has applications.

* PEARL BUFFET LCC’s Pearl Restaurant offers special student menus Oct. 8-10. Lunch is served from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. For reservations, call 455-0475.

* NEIGHBORS Ewa Neighborhood Board meets at 7 p.m. Oct. 9 at Ewa Beach Library, and the Aiea board meets at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 13 at Aiea Library (may move because of Discoverer’s Day). Call 768-3710.

* BOOK SIGNINGS Susan Yuen signs copies of her new book, Hawaii’s Bento Box Cookbook,at 2 p.m. Oct. 11 at Borders Pearlridge Oct. 11. Call 732-1709.

* FOOD EXHIBIT Kapolei Library hosts the traveling Smithsonian exhibit, Key Ingredients: America by Food, bringing a variety of displays and free programs. This week’s schedule includes Star-Bulletin features editor Betty Shimabukuro at 10:30 a.m. Oct. 11 discussing her weekly quest for Hawaii’s favorite recipes. Exhibit programs run through Oct. 18. * BLOOD DRIVE Hawaii Blood Bank conducts a donor drive from 8 a.m. to noon Oct. 12 at Hope Chapel Kapolei, 91-902 Fort Weaver Road. Call 845-9966.

* ON STAGE Kaipo Asing Trio entertains at Pearlridge Uptown at 1 p.m. Oct. 12 followed by Halau Hula O Makulehua at 2:30. Call 488-0981.

* P.O.N.Y.SIGNUPS Registration for returning P.O.N.Y. players age 5 to 14 takes place from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Oct. 12 and 19 at Makakilo Recreation Center for Makakilo-Kapolei Youth Baseball League. * HISPANIC FESTIVAL The Hispanic Heritage Festival runs from 10:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Oct. 12 at Hawaiian Waters Adventure Park, featuring rides, food, crafts, cultural displays, Latino DJs and dance troupes. Admission is $25. Call 941-5216.

* MACBETH Cast members from UH Kennedy Theatre’s Macbeth, Live and in Context perform scenes from the upcoming play at 2 p.m. Oct. 12 at Pearl City Library,at 10:30 a.m.Oct.15 at Ewa Beach Library, and at 10:30 a.m. Oct. 17 at Kapolei Library.

* FOLKLORE Baba Jamal Koram,“The StoryMan,“shares the folklore of world cultures at 10:30 a.m. Oct. 13 at Kapolei Library, at 3 p.m. Oct. 14 at Ewa Beach Library and at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 16 at Aiea Library.

* SHARKS Co-authors Gerald Crow and Jennifer Crites share facts from their book Sharks and Rays of Hawaii at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 14 at Kapolei Library.

* ROYAL MUSIC The Royal Hawaiian Band plays a free concert at noon Oct. 15 in the Kapolei Hale Courtyard. Call 922-5331.

* JAPANESE STORIES Modern storyteller Cathy Spagnoli shares Japanese folk tales at 3 p.m. Oct. 15 at Pearl City Library. Call 453-6566.

* TEEN READS Nyla Fujii-Babb and Yukie Shiroma present “a darkly humorous exploration in dance, music and story inspired by the mystique of ancient human bones” at 2 p.m. Oct. 15 at Ewa Beach Library, 2:30 p.m. Oct. 19 at Pearl City Library, and 6 p.m. Oct. 30 at Aiea Library.

* KUNIA ZONING The city Department of Planning and Permitting hears a request for a zoning variance at 1:30 p.m. Oct. 16 on the Hawaii Agriculture Research Center’s plan to retain the homes at Kunia Plantation Village and allow other uses and structures. This step is part of a city-private partnership to keep housing for former plantation workers. The hearing is in the City Council committee meeting room, Honolulu Hale 205. Call 768-8022.

* GOLF BENEFIT Independent Living Waipahu and Hawaii FI-DO sponsor a benefit golf tourney, Driving for Independence, on Oct. 17 at the Hawaii Prince Golf Course in Ewa Beach. For signups and sponsorships, call 497-2350.

* KEIKI AT LIBRARY Pearl City Library offers a fall story hour at 9:30 a.m. each Wednesday for ages 3 and older; and a puzzle time at 9:30 a.m. each Thursday for ages 1 to 3. Call 453-6566.

* FRIDAY MELE Baba Alimoot and Friends provide free musical entertainment from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. every Friday throughout Pearlridge. Call 488-0981.

* GARDENING The Urban Garden Center has a free gardening program for the public from 9 a.m. to noon on the second Saturday of each month at 955 Kamehameha Hwy. Call 453-6050.

* SENIOR KARATE Shotokan Karate Center conducts karate classes for seniors at 5:45 p.m. Wednesday and 7 a.m. Saturday in the Pearl City Highlands Elementary School cafeteria. Call 456-9407.
