Below are highlights of what’s coming up in West Oahu.

January

* YOUTH SPORTS A Youth Sports and Fitness Camp is planned from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Jan. 5 to 9 at a Pearl City park. Fee is $40 per day or $150 for the week. Call 478-1842.

* FREE ADMISSION Pacific Aviation Museum’s Education Department welcomes teachers Jan. 5 and 6 to come get free Museum HCPS III Aligned Education Program packets for their classrooms. For tickets, present a current school ID at the USS Bowfin Submarine Park Ticket Office. Call 441-1000.

* LITERACY Hawaii’s Adult Literacy Program hosts a free orientation at 6 p.m. Jan. 7 at Borders Pearlridge to show interested people how they can become a volunteer who helps adults learn to read. Call 537-6706.

* TAI CHI The Kaiser Waipio Clinic has a series of tai chi classes at 5:30 p.m. Wednesdays from Jan. 7 through April 15. Fee is $81 for nonmembers. Call 432-2270.


 

* KEIKI PROGRAMS Pearl City Library offers two free children’s winter programs: Storytime and Craft at 9:30 a.m. Wednesdays Jan. 7-Feb. 25 for ages 3 years and up, and Puzzletime Storytime for toddlers (1 to 3 years) at 9:30 a.m. Thursdays Jan. 8-Feb. 26. A parent or caregiver must be present. Call 453-6566.

* PLAY MORNINGS Kapolei Library schedules play mornings for keiki ages 2 to 5 at 10 a.m. every Thursday Jan. 8-29. All children must be accompanied by an adult. Call 693-7050.

* NEIGHBORS The Ewa Neighborhood Board meets at 7 p.m. Jan. 8 at Ewa Beach Library; the Aiea board meets at 7:30 p.m. Jan. 12 at Aiea Library. Call 768-3710.

* AVIATION LECTURE Noted author, historian, lecturer and decorated WWII Marine captain Ronald J. Drez visits the Pacific Aviation Museum to discuss two of his books: The Extraordinary Courage of Ordinary Men in WWII at 7 p.m. Jan. 9 and The Essence of Courage: Leadership at the Top at 2 p.m. Jan. 10. * WATER WORKSHOP The Honolulu Board of Water Supply and the Friends of Halawa Xeriscape Garden host a Parent/Keiki Water Conservation Workshop for children ages 4 to 10 from 10 a.m. to noon Jan. 10 at the Halawa Xeriscape Garden (99-1268 Iwaena St.), with scavenger hunts, a garden tour, coloring books and prizes. * LISTEN STORY State Sen. Mike Gabbard hosts a community meeting at 9 a.m. Jan. 10 in the Kaokila Park Meeting Room at Honokai Hale. Refreshments to be served. Call 586-6830.

* BLOOD DRIVES Hawaii Blood Bank conducts donor drives from 7:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Jan. 10 at Walmart Kunia; 7:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Jan. 18 at Waikele Center; and 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. Jan. 25 at Foodland in Ewa Town Center. Call 845-9966.

* CHOIR AUDITIONS Kaleoaloha Keiki Choir auditions new singers ages 5 to 18 for its spring season from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Jan. 10 at Our Savior Lutheran Church (across from the Pearlridge Toys R Us). Call 779-1397.

* VOLKSMARCH The Menehune Marchers Volksport Club stages a 5K and 10K walk Jan. 10 at Asing Community Park in Ewa between 7:30 and 10:30 a.m. (Deadline was Jan. 1 for the free event.) Call Carol at 626-3575.

* ON STAGE Hema Pa’a performs at 1 p.m. Jan. 11 at Pearlridge Downtown, followed by Halau Hula O Mokulehua at 2:30. Call 488-0981.

* WEIGHT LOSS A weight-loss challenge begins Jan. 13 and runs through March 3 in Aiea, with the top three winners getting cash prizes. The group meets at 6:15 p.m. Tuesdays. Call 478-1842.

* MYSTERY MOVIE Ewa Beach Library, through a grant from the Hawaii Community Foundation’s Ewa Beach Community Fund, shows an animated mystery film featuring a martial arts panda at 3:30 p.m. Jan. 13 in the meeting room. Call 689-1204.

* QUILT PROJECT Volunteers with the Home of the Brave Quilt Project return to the Pacific Aviation Museum with quilts for family members of Hawaii soldiers who have died serving in Iraq or Afghanistan Jan. 19, Feb. 16, May 25 and July 4. Call 441-1000.

* PRESCHOOL STORYTIME

Aiea Library offers a free program full of read-aloud stories, finger-plays, sing-alongs and crafts for children 2 years and older at 10:30 a.m. Jan. 21 though May 6. Children must be accompanied by a parent or caregiver. Call 483-7333.

* LATIN DANCE Noelani Hernandez teaches a class in salsa, cha cha cha, merengue and bachata from 2 to 4 p.m. Jan. 24 at Kapolei Yoga & Dance Studio (338 Kamokila Blvd #201). Cost is $20 per person, $35 for couples by Jan. 15; prices are $30 and $50 thereafter. Call 223-8600.

* HEALTHY AGING Pearl City Library hosts a free program sponsored by KCC’s Physical Therapy Assistants Program on how to prevent senior citizens from accidentally falling. Call 453-6566.
