Below are highlights of what’s coming up in West Oahu.

* NIGHT OUT The Newtown Estates subdivision in Aiea observes National Night Out from 6:30 to 9 p.m. Aug. 3 in Ipuala Place across from Nahele Park. The National Neighborhood Security Watch Initiative offers exhibits, refreshments, games, prizes and security tips for the community. Call 486-2153.

* BON DANCE Waipahu Soto Zen Temple Taiyoji has its bon dances at 7 p.m. Aug. 6 and 7 at 94-413 Waipahu St. Call 671-3103.

* BLOOD DRIVES Hawaii Blood Bank has donor drives from 7:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Aug. 7 at Pearlridge Center, 7 a.m. to noon Aug. 11 at Kapolei Bank of Hawaii and 7:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Aug. 15 at Waikele Center. Call 845-9966.


* PRESERVES CLASS May Hasegawa demonstrates local ways to make jams and pickled delicacies based on her own recipes at 9:30 a.m. Aug. 7 at Malama Learning Center at Kapolei High School. * TALK STORY State Rep. Sharon Har covers community and legislative issues with residents at 9 a.m. Aug. 7 at the Royal Kunia Community Association Center (94-615 Kupuohi St., Suite 201, across from Walmart in Kunia). Call 586-8500.

* BOWL FOR KIDS Big Brothers Big Sisters sponsors a “Bowl for Kids’ Sake” bowl-a-thon Aug. 7 and 8 at Aiea Bowl. To register a team and for details, call 695-4571.

* PEDESTRIANS State DOT officials host a meeting from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Aug. 9 at Hale Ponoi in Kapolei to hear comments on how to improve pedestrian safety through a master plan. Call 587-2160.

* BON DANCE Pearl City Hongwanji Mission has its bon dances at 7:30 p.m. Aug. 13 and 14 at 858 Second St. (455-1680); Soto Mission of Aiea-Taiheji has its bon dances at 7 p.m. Aug. 13 and 14 at 99-045 Kauhale St. 488-6794.

* GARDEN TALK The UH Urban Garden Center hosts a free demonstration on ways to control garden pests while being environmentally friendly at 9 a.m. Aug. 14 at 955 Kamehameha Hwy. in Pearl City. There also will be a mini plant sale, plant clinic and garden tours until noon. Call 453-6050.

* DINOSAURS Pearlridge Center is bursting with animated dinosaurs and related activities through Aug. 15 in both Uptown and Downtown center courts. Call 488-0981.

* ‘AUKAKE CLASSIC Special Olympics Hawaii has its 2010 ‘Aukake Classic soccer and bocce tournaments Aug. 21-22 at Waiau District Park. Call 943-8808 or visit specialolympicshawaii.org.

* FUN RUN SIGNUPS Early entry deadline ($25) is Aug. 16 for the annual Waipahu Cane Haul 5K Run, set for Aug. 22 with proceeds supporting Waipahu Community Coalition. Race starts on Waipahu Street and ends at Hawaii’s Plantation Village. Fee after Aug. 16 is $30. Call 397-7750.

* SENIOR SUMMIT Kaiser Permanente host a free lecture on plant-based nutrition at 10 a.m. Aug. 25 in Conference Room 1AB at its Waipio Clinic (94-1480 Moaniani St.). Call 432-2235.

* COLLECTION DRIVE Hawaii Self Storage at Pearl City (98-138 Hila Place) and Kapolei (488 Kamokila Blvd.) welcome donations for Ho’omalu O Na Kamali’i, a children’s receiving home on the Leeward Coast. * NANAKULI RECYCLES Reynolds Recycling’s HI-5 Nanakuli redemption center is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday at Nanakuli Village, 89-102 Farrington Hwy. (It’s closed from noon to 1 p.m.) Call 487-2802.


* EWA RECYCLES Reynolds Recycling’s HI-5 Ewa redemption center is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily at Ewa Town Center near Longs Drugs. (It’s closed from noon to 1:30 p.m.) Call 487-2802.

* TOASTMASTERS Pearl City Toastmasters meet at 7 p.m. every first and third Tuesday in the Mokihana Room of Pearlridge Gardens & Tower (98-1042 Moanalua Road). Call 780-2066.

* KAPOLEI CHORALE Kapolei Chorale invites singers to join its rehearsals at 6:30 p.m. Sundays in Makakilo. Call 672-8888 for directions and interview.

* MUSIC CLASSES Keiki Kani Music Studio has ongoing classes for all ages in music basics, piano, voice, guitar, trumpet, saxophone and low brass at its Aiea location (behind Dixie Grill). Call 487-2275 for days/times and fees.
