Below are highlights of what’s coming up in West Oahu.

* BOE The state Board of Education holds a community meeting for the Campbell, Kapolei and Waianae complexes at 6:30 p.m. Feb. 14 at Maili Elementary School on issues affecting education and the libraries. Call 586-3349.

* FOOD The Pearl at LCC serves a special Valentine lunch menu Feb. 14-16 and will hold a scholarship brunch Feb. 18. Call 455-0475 or 455-0298.

* AUTHOR Fantasy novelist Margaret Weis visits Kapolei Library at 6:30 p.m. Feb. 14. Weis also is behind games like Dungeons & Dragons and Battlestar Galactica. Call 693-7050.

* SCHOLARSHIPS Hawaii Self Storage accepts college scholarship applications through Feb. 15 from seniors at Aiea, Pearl City, Kapolei and Waipahu. Call 836-1500.


* BOOK SIGNING Rich Budnick signs copies of his newly revised Hawaiian Place Names from noon to 1 p.m. Feb. 17 at Waikele Borders, and from 2 to 3 p.m. Feb. 18 at Pearlridge Borders. Call 395-1161.

* CLEANUP Hawaii Nature Center needs help cleaning and restoring Waipahu’s Pouhala Marsh from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m.Feb.17.Call 955-0100, ext. 18.

* CLOSURES Schools are closed Feb. 19, and public libraries are closed Feb. 17-19 in observance of Presidents Day.

* RECYCLING Aloha ‘Aina Earth Day No. 24 runs from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Feb. 17 at Kapolei High School.All kinds of recyclables will be accepted, from large appliances to batteries, cans, ink cartridges and computers (one per household). * TENNIS The USTA National Junior Open Tennis tournament is Feb. 17-21 at Central Oahu Regional Park in Waipio, featuring the top junior players in Hawaii and around the nation., including Ewa Beach’s Brooke Doane. Admission is free, and free public clinics are planned during Community Day from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Feb. 19. Call 542-2422.

* ON STAGE Pineapple Squeeze performs at 1 p.m. and Halau Hula O Mokulehua at 2:30 p.m. Feb. 18 at Pearlridge Uptown. Call 488-0981.


* BLOOD Hawaii Blood Bank conducts donor drives from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Feb. 18 at Waikele Center; 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. Feb. 25 at the Ewa Town Center Foodland; 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Feb. 26 at Campbell High library, and 12:30 to 4 p.m. Feb. 26 at Pearl City Home Depot. Call 845-9966.

* BOX CARS The Box Car Track at Kunia Park-and-Ride is open from 2 to 6 p.m. Feb. 19 for Presidents Day; no reservations needed. Fee is $7, $5 or free to those over 54 and under 5. Call 947-3393.

* CLEANUP The city Department of Environmental Services plans an Adopt-A-Block event from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. Feb. 20 at Waipahu High School. Call 692-5208.

* ZONING The city Planning Commission holds a hearing at 1:30 p.m. Feb. 21 in the City Hall Annex on a Costco Wholesale request to change the zoning from preservation to mixed business in Kapolei. Call 523-4430.

* DEEJAYS DJ Azteca from Mexico City and other guest deejays present Latin Night from 9 p.m. every Friday at Panama Hatties in Aiea. Applications are being taken through Feb. 23 for “Hawaii’s 1st Latino Idol” contest (which begins March 2). Call 485-8226.

* COSMIC GOLF Jungle River Mini Golf hosts a Teen Night from 6:30 to 10:30 p.m. Feb. 23 at Pearlridge Center III, featuring cosmic golf, drinks and a live DJ. Admission is $12 to $15. Call 488-8808.

* WHALES Whale counters are needed Feb. 24 and March 31 at Ewa Beach, Ko Olina and other Oahu shoreline locations. Call 397-2651, ext. 253.

* MAKUA U.S. Army studies relating to the Makua Military Reservation are on view at the Pearl City, Waianae, Wahiawa and state (downtown) libraries over the next two months. The next public meeting is from 12:30 to 6 p.m. Feb. 24 at Waianae District Park. Call 655-8729.

* FOSTER CHILDREN Training is scheduled for volunteers who will spend six to eight hours a month helping separated foster children spend time with siblings. Training is from 8:30 to 10 a.m. Feb. 24 at Ewa Beach Community Center, 91-955 North Road. Call 528-7050.

* VIDEO Entries for HMSA’s teen video contest on health issues should be in by March 1 (visit www.hmsa.com); and ‘Olelo offers a competition for all grades on issues affecting the community, country, state or world - with a March 2 deadline. Call 834-0007.

Call 453-6566. * KAPOLEI STORYTIME Kapolei Library has free storytime, sing-alongs, finger plays and crafts for toddlers ages 2 to 3 at 10 a.m. Mondays and preschool story-time with activities at 10 a.m. Thursdays and Saturdays through April 28. * SQUARE DANCE Ewa Beach Community Park has free square dance lessons for ages 9 through adult at 7 p.m. Thursdays on North Road, across from Campbell High School. Call 358-9131.

* GOLF CLINIC Ko Olina Golf Club offers free body balance and club-fitting assessments from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays, and club-fitting appointments are $75. Also on Saturdays at the club, trainers offer free physical screenings from 12 to 4 p.m. and a $30 training clinic at 4 p.m. Daily clinics start at 5 p.m. for $30. Call 676-5300 ext. 235.
