Seven West Oahu schools will provide free breakfast and lunch to all children under the age of 18 this summer.

Sixty-eight schools qualified statewide for the service, which is provided through the state DOE food services branch.

The schools had to have at least 50 percent of regularly enrolled students on a free- or reduced-price lunch program and have some type of summer program on campus. Meal recipients, however, do not have to be enrolled in those programs.

The free meals are available Monday through Friday (except June 11, 18, 25 and July 5, 16). Parents should inquire at the site for starting dates, serving times and how to sign up for the service.

Participating West Oahu schools are Campbell High (689-1200) and August Ahrens (675-0202), Aiea, (483-7200), Ewa Beach (689-1271), Honowai (675-0165), Kaimiloa (689-1280) and Kaleiopuu (675-0266) elementary schools.

The Summer Food Service Program for Children is funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture and is intended to meet the nutritional needs of at-risk youths during the summer months.
