The Chargers’ marching band scored big for its hard-working recycling efforts. In addition to $1,322 raised from various collection days, the band also won first place and $1,000 in the Lex Brodie’s Earn and Learn School Recycling Competition. Photo from Chadwick Kamei.

A shortage of funds threatened to keep Pearl City High School’s Marching Band from traveling to any away games.

To raise funds, the students and staff decided on a HI-5 beverage recycling drive and stumbled upon the Lex Brodie’s Earn and Learn School Recycling Competition.

“We were doing the fundraiser when we found out about the challenge, and that’s when we kicked it into high gear,” said band director Chadwick Kamei. “We actually canvassed the Pearl City neighborhood and they really came through.

“This would not have been possible without the support of the community and the students.”

The Chargers’ efforts also included four recycling drives on Sundays on campus. The long hours (from 8 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.) and hard work added up to $1,322, earning the band a first-place win and a $1,000 check from the Lex Brodie’s Tire Company Foundation.

“We’re going into our next season, and that money will pay to buses, for props, the writing of the show and music,” said Kamei, adding there will be an encore recycling performance next year.

“We need every cent we can get.”

The Charger marching band has about 150 students enrolled, and the band program overall boasts about 250 students.
