City Extends Its Curbside Recycling

The city’s Department of Environmental Services launched the final phase of its islandwide curbside recycling program May 3, with the remaining 36,000 homes on automated collection service joining the three-cart pickup of refuse, mixed recyclables and green waste.

Service now extends to households in Waipahu, West Loch, Ewa, Makakilo, Kapolei, Nanakuli and Waianae.

“I am very pleased to see the beginning of the completion of our curbside recycling program, which ... has now grown to include 160,000 homes,” said Mayor Mufi Hannemann.

Current collection days will remain the same - Monday and Thursday; Tuesday and Friday; or Wednesday and Saturday - but officials said a few neighborhoods will see a change in days. A one-month transition period with continued twice-weekly refuse pickup will provide time to assimilate into the new system.
