In an effort to heighten awareness of and strengthen participation in anticrime efforts, local crime watch groups, law enforcement agencies, businesses and organizations are teaming up for an America’s Night Out Against Crime event this weekend in Kapolei.

The National Night Out begins at 5 p.m. Friday at Target in Kapolei Commons. There will be refreshments, entertainment and an announcement of the poster contest winner. Law enforcement, citizen patrol and neighborhood watch groups from District 8 also will conduct a mass sign-waving to send a message to criminals that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back.

This year’s theme is “Partnerships in Creating a Safe Neighborhood.” Participating agencies include Weed and Seed Site III, Boys & Girls Club of Hawaii, Ewa Beach Lions Club, Ewa Neighborhood Board, Kalaeloa Development and many other groups from throughout the state.
