Fire Chief Kenneth G. Silva presented a civilian Medal of Valor, several Certificates of Commendation and two Certificates of Recognition to civilians, off-duty HFD firefighters and HPD officers for their roles at several rescues and fire emergencies in 2009 and 2010 at a ceremony May 26 at the Honolulu Fire Department’s Charles H. Thurston Training Center.

Firefighter Scot Seguirant was awarded a Certificate of Recognition for his meticulous work as the lead fire investigator at an intentionally set fire in Honokai Hale. Seguirant worked with the city Prosecuting Attorney’s office for more than three years and, as a result, a successful prosecution was made.

State Rep. Ryan Yamane also received a certificate for his support of legislative proposals that promote fire and life safety for the citizens of Hawaii.

A Certificate of Recognition honors those who have worked to promote justice and peace in island communities.

“We are all fortunate that brave people like these are among us, willing to come to the aid of strangers, to help their neighbors and make a difference,” said Silva of the awardees. “The difference is great to the ones they helped.

“The least we can do is show our gratitude for their courageous acts and honor them with our appreciation.”
