Shaving and waxing aren’t the only solutions to unwanted body hair. There’s “threading,” and the new Threading Lounge in Aiea, which opened Oct. 1, has set up business to show folks its advantages over other methods.
According to the company website, threadinglounge.com, threading is practiced throughout Asia and consists of twisting cotton strings together in such a way that, as they pass over the hair follicle, they pluck the hair from the root. The method leaves skin smooth for the same duration that waxing offers, but without the use of chemicals or skin irritants.
Owner Pravina Kumar did note, however, that people with very sensitive skin may get a slight rash that goes away within a day.
Kumar has run a threading business in California for 10 years and is moving to Hawaii full time in order to help her business grow. Kumar staffed her Hawaii lounge with local residents, including one salon manager, two threading technicians and one facial esthetician.
The lounge specializes in eyebrows, lips and other facial hair, but also takes care of legs, arms and the bikini line. Kumar said that eyebrow shaping takes about 15 minutes, while leg threading takes about the same amount of time as waxing, except that it’s “totally natural and less painful.” Other salon services include facials, waxing and sugaring.
As a master threading artist, Kumar said she offers the necessary three months training to her staff and may open a threading school here.
“We offer a clean and hygienic environment,” she said. “Our objective is to bring a level of sophistication to the industry where women and men feel welcome, relaxed and enjoy receiving services from us.”
The Threading Lounge is located at Pearl Kai Shopping Center, suite C-6. For more information, call 484-2080.
