The Oahu Resource Conservation and Development Council recently awarded $194,000 in agricultural development grants to seven Oahu businesses, including Takenaka Landscaping Company Inc. in Kunia.

Takenaka Landscaping will use its money to develop and install a streamlined production system for landscaping plants and organic vegetable seedlings for homeowners, landscapers and farmers. The vegetable seedlings also will be used on a 10-acre farm for organic vegetable production.

It is the company’s goal to provide the farm and home-garden community the chance to purchase healthy vegetable starts grown in locally produced organic potting mixes, as well as a wide variety of potted landscaping plants.

Individual awards ranged from $4,400 to $40,000, to support the expansion of existing poultry, aquaponic, aquaculture and nursery operations as well as the completion of both a food safety-certified processing facility and a commercial kitchen. Funding for the program is provided by the USDA’s Natural Resources Conservation Service.

A new round of funding is anticipated in spring 2011.
