The Civilian Medal of Valor, the highest honor the Honolulu Fire Department can bestow upon a member of the public, was awarded to Ocean Safety and Lifeguard Services Division lifeguard Bouvey Bradbury for outstanding bravery and risking his own life to save another.

While off duty Jan. 18, the Waianae resident jumped into turbulent water off the Waianae Coast to rescue a military man who had been swept into an underwater cave.

Bradbury was awarded the medal during a recent ceremony at HFD’s Charles H. Thurston Training Center. Several other members of the community were given certificates of commendation for their selfless deeds that took place throughout the year.
