Road Safety Campaign Starts Up With Free Rider Classes

In observance of Motorcycle Safety Month in Hawaii, Leeward Community College offers free Experienced Rider Courses every Saturday and Sunday through June 13.
Instructed by Motorcycle Safety Foundation certified rider coaches, the courses are designed to educate the public to be mindful of all roadway users as the Department of Transportation launches its statewide radio campaign to “Share the Road.”
“Our purpose for offering this course tuition-free is to encourage as many riders as possible to have an opportunity to sharpen their skills in a safe, high-challenge, low-stress environment,” said LCC safety and industry program coordinator Bill Labby.
After a classroom tutorial, riders will perform exercises in posture, head turns, swerves, pressing and leaning the motorcycle to keep a good center of balance, among many other skills. Everyone is required to wear a helmet, long pants, long-sleeved shirt and over-the-ankle, hard-sole shoes.
“This is a five- to six-hour course that is conducted solely on the motorcycle skills range,” said Labby, adding that the course qualifies all graduates for insurance premium discounts with certain motorcycle insurers.
Participants must already be licensed riders and possess basic riding skills. They also must have successfully completed the college’s free Basic Rider Course (call 455-0479) and have their own registered motorcycle or motor scooter.
Courses run from 1 to 5 p.m this Saturday and Sunday, and from 7 a.m. to noon May 29, 30, June 5, 6, 12 and 13. Space is available on a first-come, first-served basis.
