A private ceremony was held Jan. 18 to mark the purchase of St. Francis Medical Center-West by Hawaii Medical Center, a partnership of Hawaii Physician Group LLC and Cardiovascular Hospital of America (CHA) LLC.
A more elaborate ceremony was held the same day at the Liliha branch, which is also under the new ownership. The closing for both locations was Jan. 14; the hospitals have been renamed Hawaii Medical Center West and Hawaii Medical Center East.
Hawaiian blessings were conducted at both sites by Kahu Kordell Kekoa, with doctors, nurses and staff present. The event included a symbolic passing of a hand-held kahili from Sister Agnelle Ching of St. Francis Health Systems to Hawaii Medical Center leaders, CEO Dr. Danelo Canete and Chairman (CEO and president of CHA) Dr. Badr Idbeis. Canete and Idbeis also offered speeches at the ceremonies which welcomed in Hawaii’s only physician-owned hospital.
