Maria Deguzman

Maria Deguzman of Makakilo and other members of the UH Manoa Debate and Forensics Society have returned home from an impressive showing at the Yale Inter-Varsity debate tournament, held Oct. 22-24 in Connecticut.

Though the undergrad debate team has only been in existance for two years, the Hawaii team defeated teams from Stanford, Cornell, UCLA, Columbia, Dartmouth, MIT, NYU, St. John’s, Boston University, West Point and Fordham in the nation’s largest and most-prestigious debate competition.

Deguzman competed on the B Team with Kyle Dahlin (Kailua). Together they averaged two speaker points behind A Team the top team in the competition.

The team is directed by speech department assistant professor Robert Boller.

Longs Drugs has announced the recipients of its 2010 Educational Grant Program, established to assist high school graduates who are interested in a career in business with their educational expenses.

Those from West Oahu receiving a $1,000 grant are Richard Mizusawa (Aiea High), Priscilla Lai (Campbell High), Angelica Hunter (Kapolei High), Camille Onate (Pearl City High) and Bryana Mariko Mansano (Waipahu High).
