A workshop this month on Oahu will educate farmers on what it takes to qualify for crop insurance and how to apply for it.
The workshop is scheduled for 5 to 7:30 p.m. Nov. 16 at the Cooperative Extension Service office in Kaneohe, 45-260 Waikalua Road. The deadline to sign up for most 2011 crop insurance is Dec. 31, or Dec. 1 for the Noninsured Crop Disaster Assistance Program. (NAP applies to vegetables, cut flowers, animals, cacao, taro and fruits other than bananas and papayas.)
National disaster assistance is especially important now, in light of a year that’s offered drought, vog, new pests and diseases as well as the ailing economy to Hawaii’s agriculture industry. On top of that, federal rules now require farmers to have crop insurance before they can apply for the USDA Farm Service Agency disaster funds.
