West Oahu residents are invited to attend two out-reach workshops on Oahu’s newly updated tsunami evacuation zone maps.

The new maps were developed using scientific techniques and technology not available when they were first drawn up two decades ago. Generally, the maps extend the inundation zone boundaries.

Area workshops are scheduled at 5:30 p.m. July 19 at Halawa District Park (for Pearl City to Airport) and July 20 at Kapolei Hale (for Kahe Point to Kalaeloa).

“The new tsunami evacuation maps are of significant importance to our residents and the safety of their families and property,” explained Melvin Kaku, director of the city Department of Emergency Management.

“We hope that everyone will take the opportunity to attend and learn more about them.”

Funded by a federal mitigation grant, the UH Manoa Tsunami Inundation Project took about six years to complete. Staff from the city DEM will attend and answer questions at the meetings. The maps should be online this week at the department’s website at oahuDEM.org.
