Waipahu Intermediate School was the place to be Aug. 5 as residents teamed with law enforcement officers, civic groups, businesses, neighborhood organizations and local officials to reaffirm their shared commitment to clean Hawaii’s streets of crime and drugs. It was the 25th annual National Night Out campaign, Waipahu style.

Making this event extra special was an honors ceremony for Neighborhood Security Watch and Citizen Patrol volunteers from Honolulu, Pearl City, Halawa and Waipahu. Keynote speakers praising these everyday heroes were 2002 Miss Hawaii USA Juliet Lighter, Ann Kubo and Mayor Mufi Hannemann. Everyone then set out on foot along three routes on Pupuole and Aniani to raise community awareness and pride. Lining the streets and making this a true celebration were food stands and free entertainment.

This year’s two NNOs (the other was Aug. 8 in Ewa Beach) support the YMCA’s Weed and Seed program.
