Having its bon dance so early in the obon season, says Rev. Toyokazu Hagio, brought out many more fans than usual to Ewa Hongwanji Buddhist Temple’s annual festivities on June 17. “This year was a great success,” he declared, noting the help from the Lions Club, which handled the popular dinner plates. The 50-member temple also had paved over its grass parking lot since last summer, so dancers were on firmer ground. The centuryold mission in Ewa has seen a lot of history, including a fire that destroyed the original temple, military use during World War II, then modern renovations. About 250 attended the event. The next West Oahu bon dance will be July 21-22 at Rissho Kosei Kai Hawaii Kyokai in Pacific Palisades.
