Waipahu’s Highway Inn celebrated its 60th year with a gala dinner at the Royal Hawaiian Hotel on Sept. 23. Mayor Mufi Hannemann was on hand to congratulate the family business which has been in service for three generations. Bruce Hamada and Jim Howard provided entertainment, as did the Hawaiian Trio. Gee Yung performed a lion dance to celebrate the company’s 60 years, an auspicious number in Asian culture. The program highlight was a documentary by Robert Pennybacker, who condensed a history of the business from 1947 to now into a 14-minute film, bringing many guests to tears. “Our gala was more beautiful than we could have hoped for,” concluded vice president and granddaughter of the founder, Regina M. Toguchi.
