The observation areas at Ko Olina Golf Course were sparsely populated (by mostly foreign media and program volunteers) during the Feb. 21 pro-am, the day before the Fields Open would move into full swing. Professionals tested their shots on the practice green with only a hint of the frenzy and commotion that fans would bring over the next four days — like when Ai Miyazato stepped out of the roped-off professional zone to be swarmed by enthusiastic media from Japan. Tadd Fujikawa generated buzz wherever he went,, and at one point he and his mother Lori spent some time chatting with fellow young sensation Natalie Gulbis and her father John. Island fans who showed up had great photo opportunities and some oneon- one time with the pros.
