Aiea defensive lineman Lawrence Lagafuaina began the 2009 prep football season as the 11th-rated prospect in the state, according to the recruiting service Rivals.com. Three months later, the 6-foot-2, 330-pounder has lived up to all preseason expectations in leading Na Ali’i back to the Division II State Tournament.

Lagafuaina was slowed by an ankle injury at the end of the regular season, but was back in form last week as he and the team prepared for their state tournament game against Lahainaluna, which was to take place over the weekend. Lagafuaina took some time away from school and practice last week to answer some questions from MidWeek.

Who’s had the biggest impact on you in your life? My mom. She makes sure everything is good, and she likes football.

What’s the fun of football for you?

I like hitting people. I like both pass rushing and stopping the run. It’s a fun game.

Did football come easy to you? I had to improve myself before I could like it. It was kind of hard my freshman year because I started on varsity and had never played JV. It was a whole new level. I was playing with guys much bigger than me, and it made me a better player now.

Who’s your most competitive teammate in practice? I’ll say (sophomore offensive lineman) Zach Mauga. He’s a hard worker, and he likes to challenge himself. When I switch sides, he’ll switch with the other guard so that he can go up against me.

You’re stuck on Kahoolawe and you can have an endless supply of one food. What would it be? Homemade garlic chicken with rice and macaroni salad.

As one who is being recruited by a lot of Division I colleges, what will ultimately determine what school you select? I’m looking to be part of a higher-standard program. I want to see how they run things, and there has to be chemistry (between him and the school). I’m interested in majoring in the culinary arts, and some of the schools recruiting me are known for that.

When football and school aren’t consuming your time, what do you do for fun? I like to play basketball. I go to Halawa Park a lot and try to do active things.

What Internet sites do you frequent the most? Google and You Tube. I like to watch football highlights and things. I like to watch Troy Polamalu (of the Pittsburgh Steelers). I like the way he flies around.

What movie could you watch over and over again? Stepbrothers. It’s funny. I like all kinds of movies.

What celebrity would you like most to accompany you to the prom? Kim Kardashian. She’s a model and actress.
