In the huddle, Aiea quarterback Keenan Naeole was as good as on the field in Na Ali’i coach Wendell Say’s view.

“He led by example - he’s probably the toughest person, mentally, that I’ve been around in my many years of coaching,” said Say, who recently completed his 28th season at Aiea.

Naeole was recently named the Oahu Interscholastic Association’s Offensive Player of the Year, after throwing for 1,521 yards and 10 touchdowns this fall. For much of the season, he led the state in yardage as well as passing efficiency, and would likely have piled up bigger numbers had Na Ali’i not narrowly missed the postseason.

If the OIA had a Comeback Player of the Year honor, it would also have likely gone to Naeole, who missed almost all of his junior season with a broken collarbone suffered in a game against Mililani.

After recovering well enough to join the basketball team last winter, Naeole was then side-tracked by a broken wrist on the eve of the OIA playoffs, missing Na Ali’i's ensuing run to the Division II title and delaying his development on the football field. This fall, he made up for lost time, however, in leading a high-powered offensive attack.

“He has a good arm, he’s accurate, and he’s smart,” said Say.

Naeole was joined on the Red West’s First Team by teammates James Buchanan and Jeff Mauga. Buchanan was a senior wide receiver this fall, while Mauga just completed his junior season.

“James has speed and athleticism, and he’s another smart kid,” said Say. “Jeff’s a great kid who works hard. He’s only a junior, so he has a lot of good years ahead of him.”

Aiea also placed Daniel Li’ili’i (running back), Aldodius Colquitt (wide receiver) and Lika Aviu (offensive lineman) on the West’s Second Team. All-league selections are made by the conference coaches.

* Kapolei had three players - Mason Koa (utility), Cyril Ontai (linebacker) and Chad Lopati (defensive lineman) - selected to the First Team. Offensive lineman Stan Hasiak and defensive backs Nate Dixon, Kalae Parish and Lyle Santiago made the Second Team from Kapolei, which finished its season at 7-5.

* Campbell play-maker Samson Anguay was one of only two sophomores to make the West’s First Team, along with Mililani wide receiver Taz Stevenson.Anguay was one of the most exciting players in the state and scored his team’s first seven touchdowns this fall. He was joined on the First Team by offensive lineman Shane Gaui and defensive lineman Chris Fuga. Saber teammates Hauoli Anderson (OL), Koroseta Leauma (DL) and Giuliano Stevenson (LB) were chosen for the Second Team.
