The afterglow from Hawaii Pacific University’s Division II National Championship in softball shows no sign of fading. That’s just fine with Breanne Patton, the former Campbell standout and the Sea Warriors’ starting first baseman. By the time her eligibility runs out, Patton, who lives in Ewa Beach, will have finished her career with work well done.

In her two years at HPU, she’s already started 105 of 108 games played, and her fielding percentage of .986 was tops on the team during her freshman campaign of 2009, showing her ability to make the transition from prep to the collegiate-level softball.

Patton recently took some time away from her summer workouts to answer some questions for MidWeek‘s West Oahu Islander.

How has it been the last few weeks since you and your teammates won the Division II National Championship? I don’t think it will ever sink in. It’s been awesome. The other day I was walking down the street (in Ewa Beach), and a guy I don’t know was driving by and he stopped to tell me congratulations.

What is your earliest sports-related memory? I remember when I was young and I first started playing softball. I didn’t know which hand I was supposed to throw with. I write left-handed, but I play right-handed.

What part of your game will you concentrate on in the off-season? Oh, my goodness. I need to work on my hitting, and I need to work on my strength.

What’s been the biggest adjustment from high school to the college level for you? In college, we have to do more on our own. They’re not going to baby you the whole time.

What is your least-favorite household chore? Cleaning the bathroom. I’m sure everyone says that. Ooh - it’s just gross.

Are you the life of the party or the girl who stands by and listens? I think I am both. Can you be both? I love people, but sometimes I am more laid back.

What site do you frequent the most on the Internet? Facebook. All I do is talk to my friends and update my pictures.

What movie could you watch over and over? The Guardian, with Ashton Kutcher and Kevin Costner. It’s really good. I’ve seen it like maybe 10 times.

What is currently in your iPod? I have almost 1,000 songs and a couple of movies. I have so many different kinds of music - Hawaiian, rhythm and blues, and I have some oldies.

Who’s had the biggest impact on you in your life? I would have to say my parents (Bob and Joyce). They inspire me. They’re hard workers, and they never let me give up on anything.

Do you play video games? What system do you have, and what are your favorites? I have a Nintendo DS, but I don’t really play that often.

You are stuck on the island of Kahoolawe. You have an endless supply of one food. What would it be? I love eating - there’s so much to choose from. How about chocolate cookie-dough ice cream. It’s so unhealthy. I have to go run after that.
