If the Pearl City girls volleyball team needed an extra boost leading up to the OIA Red volleyball tournament, it came in the form of senior Tabytha Inong, who recently saw her first action since recovering from a torn ACL.

Inong, whose sisters Tiana and Taylor are former Charger stars, got hurt Jan. 31 and had surgery in late March. Her return to the lineup in a Waipahu game alone was cause for celebration.

“It felt good being out there with my teammates again,” said Inong. “The adrenaline (rush) felt good.”

Pearl City is in the midst of another stellar season, having taken a 10-1 record into its OIA Red West finale late last week. They already had assured themselves of either a No. 1 or No. 2 seed out of the West for the OIA tournament, which begins next week. The top five finishers there earn berths at the Division I state volleyball championships Oct. 27-30 at various sites on Maui. On the eve of the prep volleyball post-season, Inong took some time away from the practice court to answer some questions for MidWeek‘s West Oahu Islander.

Who’s had the biggest impact on you in your life? All of my coaches have influenced me a lot.

What was your focus on in the off-season? I was still doing rehab, but I learned a lot and was kind of a verbal leader. I talked non-stop to the team. It (the perspective of a coach) was very different. Coach Stephanie had told me when I was injured that I would still be a part of the team and could help. It made me feel good. When I was cleared in mid-August, it was real hard and my timing was horrible. I had to get my coordination back.

What’s the best part of playing in the Pearl City program? We’re a family. We’re really close and support each other. My team-mates were really supportive of me when I was hurt, and my coaches pushed me to get back on the court.

What Internet site do you frequent the most? I

don’t go on the Internet much. I’m more focused on school and volleyball, and that’s time-consuming. I don’t get home most nights until 7, then I still have to eat and do my homework and shower.

What is your least favorite household chore? Washing the dishes. Not my style, but I have to do it. I don’t really have a choice.

What movie could you watch over and over? I really liked Avatar. It’s my favorite movie. I love it. I like the action.

Who is your most competitive teammate at Pearl City’s practices? Usually all of my teammates are competing every day for (starting) spots. Nothing is set (as a lineup). There are three other middle blockers, and I’m usually competing with them.

What’s in your iPod? I really like “pump up” music - things that make my adrenalin go higher. It gets me pumped up and brings me energy.

How many text messages do you send/receive a day? About 200. I text my best friend (teammate Tonisha Buford) a lot, and my friends and teammates are all close.

If you could have your pick, what celebrity would you choose as your prom date? There are so many to choose from. I would say Taylor Lautner.

You’re stuck on the island of Kahoolawe. You can have an endless supply of one food. What would it be? I would say pizza. I like Chuck E. Cheese’s pizza.
