For Ashley Shoemaker, there was no direct line to becoming one of the top bowlers on Hawaii’s high school scene. When she captured the OIA individual title recently, the Pearl City senior had only just passed her three-year anniversary of taking up the sport.

“My parents tell me that I’m more of a natural bowler,” said Shoemaker, who is the daughter of Lloyd and Noemi.“I’ve only been bowling since I was 14. I never thought my average would improve like it has.”

As a sophomore, she averaged “140 to 150,” she said. Last year, she saw that increase to the 175-range en route to finishing fifth and sixth overall in the OIA and the State Bowling championships, respectively. She averaged 186.15 during the recently completed season, and her output of 1,094 pins was one pin better than Kalani’s Brandi Kawamoto at the OIA finals.

In addition to getting a late start in bowling, her time at the alley has been limited this past year because of her part-time job at Jeans Warehouse, making her ability to perform well in the big events all the more impressive. Shoemaker took some time away from her schedule last week to answer some questions for MidWeek.

How do you feel before the start of a match? Usually a lot of feelings run through me, but nervous is the one that gets me the most. I’m always nervous on my first throw.

Who’s had the biggest impact on you in your life? Probably my dad. I see him as a hero. He served his country in the military.

What Internet site do you frequent the most? I usually go on MySpace to visit with friends and family.

What is your least favorite household chore? Probably doing the dishes. I just don’t like getting my hands and clothes all wet.

What movie could you watch over and over? Probably White Chicks. I like comedy movies.

Who is your most competitive teammate at practice? Robert Nakanishi. He blocks people out - he’s not distracted - and he can concentrate. He’ll yell really loud when he throws a good ball.

What’s in your iPod? I don’t have an iPod. I don’t have an MP3 player or anything.

Do you play video games? I volunteer to work for Mobile Gamer Guys, which has eight Xbox 360s. People book us for graduations, birthday parties ... I play Call of Duty IV and Halo mostly.

What would you like to major in at college? I actually have two options. I’d like to study forensic science or go into high school teaching.

Are you a neat freak or messy? At home, I’m more of a messy person. When it comes to school, I’m really organized.

If you could have your pick, what celebrity would you choose as your prom date? Taylor Lautner, who plays Jacob in Twilight.

You’re stuck on the Island of Kahoolawe. You can have an endless supply of one food. What would it be? Probably spaghetti. I love my mom’s spaghetti.
