Pearl City High’s Shanise Gabriel-Yomes knows her eligibility clock is ticking. As a senior basketball player, she’s determined to get the most out of her senior year.

“There are no second chances - there’s nothing after this,“she said.“It’s exciting for us all to see how it has all come together after all of our hard work.”

Gabriel-Yomes and the Chargers figure to be one of the more interesting teams to track this season with seasoned veterans Jordan Ahakuelo, Glacen Florita, Markeshia Manning and Leina Vasquez also back in the fold from a team that went 7-5 in the OIA Red West Conference. Only hours before she and her teammates were to take the floor in their preseason opener versus Castle last week as part of the Leilehua Tournament, Gabriel-Yomes paused for some questions from MidWeek.

What are your early impressions of the Pearl City team? What can the Charger Nation expect this winter? I think we’ll be a surprise to everybody. We’re going to show how much we’ve grown as a team and how much teamwork we have this year.

What aspect of your game did you focus on in the off-season? I tried to be more of a team player and focus on getting the ball to people who can score for us instead of just me scoring.

Who’s had the biggest impact on you in your life? My Grandmother. She passed away when I was in eighth grade. She was always there for me and always there to encourage me. When I think of her, I’m encouraged to do my best.

What Internet site do you frequent the most? My Space. I spend an hour or less a day. It’s how I keep in touch with my sisters (Caprice and Kandace) who live on the Mainland.

What is your least favorite household chore? Cleaning the bathroom. It takes a long time.

Who is your most competitive teammate at practice? Jordan Ahakuelo. She doesn’t go easy on us. She encourages us to go hard all the time and makes us try our best. The intensity goes up for everybody.

What’s in your iPod? A lot of songs. I like Lil Wayne.

Do you play video games? Once in awhile. I have Play Station 3 and Wii. I like Call of Duty, and my cousins and I like to play the baseball game on Wii.

What would you like to major in at college? I want to major in nursing. My aunt is a nurse, and I can picture myself being one.

Are you a neat freak or messy? I’m pretty organized.

If you could have your pick, what celebrity would you choose as your prom date? Taylor Lautner, who plays Jacob in Twilight.

You’re stuck on the Island of Kahoolawe. You can have an endless supply of one food. What would it be? Lasagna. I love all kinds of lasagna. I like Italian food.
