Part 2 of a review of 2008 West Oahu prep sports

Aiea Boys Basketball Team Wins Second Consecutive OIA Title. Josh Chung scored 20 points, including 14 in the critical third quarter, and Obie Woods added 13 as Aiea used clutch free-throw shooting in the final stanza to hold off Farrington 54-49 in the OIA White Conference championship game Feb. 14. An enthusiastic throng of about 1,500 at McKinley Student Council Gym saw Aiea capture its second straight league title. Much of the damage was done at the charity stripe, where Aiea had been just 4-for-11 in the first three quarters, before doing an about-face in the fourth quarter by converting on 11-for-13. Much was expected from Na Ali’i after they captured the 2006-07 OIA Division II title, and they never wavered in their encore performance, winning all 13 regular-season games, as well as posting a perfect 3-0 mark in the conference tournament.Aiea, which finished 18-1 on the year overall, defeated both Kaiser and Hawaii Baptist the following week to advance to the championship game of the Division II State Tournament, where they lost a rematch to Farrington, 70-68. In addition to Chung and Woods, Na Ali’i also received solid seasons from James Buchanan,Aldodius Colquitt, Kory Naoele, Daniel Liilii and Zack Hannemann.

Campbell Football Team Wins OIA Division II Title.Lalo Respicio threw three touchdown passes to Daniel Masifilo and ran for another score to lead Campbell to a 28-14 win over Radford at Aloha Stadium in the OIA White Football Championship game Nov. 7. The game neatly summarized the season to that point for Campbell, which lived off of big plays after having installed the run-and-shoot offense during the previous spring following the hiring of first-year head coach and former Aiea long-time offensive coordinator Amosa Amosa. Respicio was the catalyst, throwing for nearly 3,000 yards on the season (with 33 touchdowns) while distributing the ball to a talented cast of play-makers that included Derrick Santiago, Samson Anguay, Brandon Ahuna and Arthur Aiwohi. The Sabers followed up their run in the OIA by traveling to Konawaena, where they defeated the previously undefeated Wildcats 25-15 in a Division II State Tournament game Nov. 1. Campbell’s bid for a state title ended Nov. 8, when they were defeated by eventual champion Iolani, 24-6. Campbell finished its season at 11-2.

Pearl City Girls Soccer Team Wins OIA Red Championship. Meghan Fuller and Erika Kim Seu both scored goals, while goal-keeper Myra Yamamoto was nothing less than spectacular in the waning moments as Pearl City defeated Mililani 2-1 to capture the OIA Red Division Championship Jan. 19. It marked the third time in as many meetings that the Chargers had defeated Mililani. As in the first two meetings, when she produced the game-winning goal for Pearl City in both, Fuller again provided the dagger, staking the Chargers out to a 1-0- lead in the OIA title game.Defensively, the Chargers were plainly one of the state’s best teams, giving up no goals in their regular season and only two in the OIA’s post-season. The following week, Pearl City beat Moanalua in the quarterfinals of the State Soccer Championships, but the Chargers’ bid for a state title was turned away by Punahou in a 3-0 semifinal loss. Pearl City finished its incredible season at 15-1-2 under co-head coaches Frank Baumholtz III and Tracee Kono.

Campbell Girls Take Third At DataHouse State Softball Championships.Leinna Kalua went 4-for-4 with a triple, a double and three RBI and teammates Gerika Pantohan,Amber Kaulia and Breanne Patton each had two hits to lead Campbell to a 10-0 rout of Waiakea in the third-place game of the State Softball Championships May 17 at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium in Manoa. The win capped off a 14-5 season for the Sabers, who are coached by David Perriera. Campbell had finished as the OIA’s runner-up the previous week to Mililani in the OIA and went on to post wins over Castle (1-0) and Baldwin (4-1) at the state tournament before a 1-0 loss to eventual champion, Kamehameha, ended their bid for a state title.

Pavo Wins Fourth Individual State Judo Title; Charger Boys and Girls Win “Team” State Championships. Christian Pavo made history May 11 when he defeated Julian Garay of Moanalua to become Hawaii’s first four-time boys state champion. Pavo also completed an undefeated high school career with the win in the 161-pound division in leading the Chargers to their fifth state championship all-time. The Chargers did much of their scoring in the higher weight classes that day to tie Punahou for the “team championship,” getting individual titles from Pavo,Aaron Puahala (198) and Tyler Lauifi (275),who also had won a title in his class in 2007.Although the Charger girls didn’t have any individual champions, strong performances by Hazel Asperin (5th, 98-pound class), Briana Delos Santos (3rd, 103), Kelly Ancheta (6th, 109), Jessica Domingo (2nd, 115), Lacey Katakura (5th, 139) and Jamilyn Chur (5th, 154) enabled them enough points to edge Punahou for the girls title.

Pearl City’s Aranaydo Wins Individual Air Riflery State Title. Pearl City’s LeLan Aranaydo won an individual boys state title with a final tabulation of 546 to outlast Paul Berce of St. Anthony (535) at the 10th Civilian Marksmanship Program Air Riflery State Championships at Blaisdell Center Exhibition Hall Oct. 28. As a team, the Chargers, who had won a second straight OIA title the week before, finished second in the state to Punahou by a mere six points behind strong performances by Andrew Yamada (490), Warren Ramiscal (509) and Derrick Shigemura (487). Aranaydo was named Player of the Year in the West at season’s end, while father Les was selected as the Coach of the Year.

Kapolei Has Breakthrough Season In Boys Basketball. Mason Koa scored 10 points, and Kapolei overcame a 12-4 first-quarter deficit as the Hurricanes defeated Leilehua 39-34 in the consolation bracket of the OIA Red basketball playoffs to earn their first-ever post-season win in the program’s six seasons. Although the Hurricanes lost to Kahuku in the consolation final the following day, Kapolei’s 10-5 season marked its best win total to date under coach Gary Elison. In addition to Koa, the Hurricanes also received big contributions from Keanu Montez, D’shaun Dubois, Magic Halmos and Nate Dixon.

Kapolei Girls Win OIA Division II Volleyball Title. Marie Nataniela pounded 15 kills as top-seeded Kapolei outlasted Kailua 25-23, 25-19, 21-25, 25-22 to capture the OIA White Conference Volleyball Championship at McKinley High School’s Student Council Gymnasium Oct. 30. The win capped off a 17-0 season against OIA Division II competition for the Hurricanes, who are coached by Naidah Gamurot. In addition to Nataniela’s strong play that night, the team also received big contributions from Gabrielle Matautia (10 kills and two blocks), Courtney Seminavage (nine kills), Kirsten Otsuka (36 assists) and Luana Scheer (three aces). Kapolei made its first-ever appearance in the state tournament the following week, finishing fifth. The Hurricanes’ final record was 18-1.
