The winners of ‘Olelo Community Television’s fifth annual Youth Xchange video competition were announced May 9 at an awards ceremony at the Ihilani, and Aikahi Elementary School made off with top honors in the elementary division of the Living Healthy category for Get Out and Play for 60 Minutes a Day.

A total of 30 winners (29 in 11 categories plus a Judges Choice seed) were selected from more than 450 entries that poured in from 70 schools statewide. Students in grades K-12 submitted videos on topics ranging from homelessness to making peace in categories that included public service announcements, news, mini-documentary, animation, music video, short and experts, as well as in three subject-sponsored categories.

“The level of awareness and understanding our youths have about issues that affect their lives and our community never ceases to amaze us,” said Keali’i Lopez, president and CEO of ‘Olelo Community Television. He added that the students’ abilities to voice their viewpoints on how to address community issues while incorporating technology is inspiring.

“Each year we are continually impressed by the level of thought, creativity and enthusiasm of the Youth Xchange participants,” Lopez said. “Our youth have a lot to say - through the medium of video - about important issues and concerns that affect their lives and the lives of others. By expressing themselves through this venue, we hope they will continue to be engaged as future leaders in their community.”

Winning schools received Sony video equipment, and top winners received high-definition Sony digital cameras.

Additionally, the winning schools’ media instructors got free training for Final Cut Pro, compliments of Apple Education Hawaii, and all participants received offers for free video production training at any of ‘Olelo’s six Community Media Centers on Oahu (including Kahuku High School and Windward Community College). All of this year’s winning entries can be viewed at 2 p.m. May 24 and 26 on ‘Olelo FOCUS Channel 49. Videos are also up on ‘Olelonet, ‘Olelo’s “Video On Demand” service, at www.olelo.org
