He may live in Lanikai only during the summer months, but artist Michael Ives knows it well. So well, in fact, that his depiction of Kailua Beach Park fronting Buzz’s Original Steak House has caused quite a stir at the popular eatery.

Famous for its prime location and good eats, Buzz’s Original Steak House in Kailua also is known locally for its lunar calendar, which it publishes yearly featuring work by a local artist illustrating Windward ocean and mountain scenes and Island flora. It’s considered a feather in the cap of those whose work it showcases, such as Island artist Gary Reed’s scenic Pali landscape on the 2008 calendar - and Ives is no exception.

His painting,“Lanikai Evening,“was purchased by the restaurant, where it hangs above the “Presidential Table"on the lanai and was printed by Kailua’s PrintLogicInc. to grace Buzz’s 2009 calendar.

“I painted it at the end of last season,“said Ives, who is based in Tucson and lives in Lanikai four months a year. “My wife, Jill, and I walk the beach every evening, and this is what we see.”

The painting,he says,“depicts the wonderful energy of the Lanikai community and paddler’s club each evening as locals and tourists alike go for their evening stroll or play in the ocean.”

“Lanikai Evening” is folksy and more whimsical than the artwork Buzz’s normally chooses for its calendar, but when Ives presented it to Buzz’s owner Bobby Lou Schneider Yeackel, she immediately was taken with the painting.

“She was so excited she just showed it to everyone asking ‘should we do this?’” Ives recalled, which was answered with a resounding “yes.”

Proceeds from calendar sales go to the Hawaii Foodbank.

Ives has traveled the world in his artistic endeavors, carrying a small studio along for impromptu sessions on site. He often is asked to speak about the creative process to art classes and groups, and also produces videos of his work.
