The Windward Clubhouse of the Boys and Girls Club got a shot in the arm last week with the long-awaited release of $1.5 million in state capital improvement funds.

The clubhouse, which opened on the Kailua Intermediate School campus in 2006, already has raised $3.5 million from corporations, foundations and individuals. A recent half marathon and fun run brought in $9,800 more. The state money, released by Gov. Linda Lingle Oct. 26, will pay for renovations to the boys locker room to create separate new locker rooms and showers for boys and girls. Still ahead are plans to develop a media center, build a social recreational facility and cover part of the basketball courts.

“We’re really excited about the $1.5 million from the state and look forward to breaking ground (hopefully) in the new year,” said clubhouse director Maureen Purington.

David Nakada, head of Boys & Girls Club of Hawaii, called the CIP a great opportunity to partner with the state DOE, allowing his nonprofit group “to build a facility and offer a program that will seamlessly create an 8 a.m.-to-8 p.m. in-school and after-school day at Kailua Intermediate.

“We could not have come this far,” Nakada added, “without the visionary leadership and perseverance of principal Suzanne Mulcahy.”

The clubhouse has programs for youths ages 7 to 17 on and off campus six days a week. Purington said it has more than 500 dues-paying members ($1 per year), with 80 of those children using services daily. “We do a lot with that dollar!” she declared.

More benefits to get ready for: a Feb. 12 garage sale and a March 6 Mardi Gras gala at Formaggio’s in Kailua. For more details, call 263-0555.
