A roping and riding good time is in store at the 15th annual Zip Memorial All-Girls Rodeo, where the state’s best cowgirls compete for top honors next weekend in Windward Oahu.

Competition begins at 9 a.m. Sept. 8 at Kualoa Ranch, honoring the life of one of Hawaii’s great quarter horse stallions, AKA Diamond Jim (Zip), who died unexpectedly earlier this year from a ruptured colon.

“Zip was a very well-known horse in the rodeo circuit,” said Sandy Van, vice president of the Hawaii Women’s Rodeo Association. “He’s been ridden by many contestants. This horse could do it all.”

Competitions include breakaway roping, team roping, goat tying, barrel racing, calf mugging, pole-bending and steer undecorating. The association also plans a special exhibition, mixed barrels, where the state’s top men and women in barrel racing compete in teams.

“The mixed barrels event is not entirely new, because we did it last year for the first time, but basically it’s one man and one woman on a team, the guy and girl both run, and their times are combined,” Van explained.

“Last year it was a very popular event, and we expect it to be even bigger this year.”

Sanctioned by the HWRA and offering more than $10,000 in prize money, the rodeo is expected to draw more than 120 contestants from across Hawaii. And for the first time, neighbor island cowgirls were planning to bring their cars and trailers with them as well as their horses. According to Van (prior to the court ruling last week), several contestants counted on Hawaii Superferry to make travel and care for the horses simpler.

Rodeo admission is $7 in advance or $9 at the gate. For details, visit www.rodeooahu.com or call Lu Faborito at 668-9006.

Leading the list of 17 backers is the title sponsor, Tradewinds Quarter Horses.
