Castle High School freshman Megan Jessee isn’t one to shy away from hard work. The 14-year-old spent four hours over two days digging dirt at the school’s lower campus in hope of solving a long-standing drainage problem.

“It was physically hard but it was mentally relaxing,” said Jessee, who has plenty of practice digging - mostly weeds - at home.“We have a banana patch in back of our house, so I kind of know what it’s like to dig.”

The sweaty endeavor earned Jessee community service credits for Arlene Nishimiya’s social studies class. The job also produced one broken hoe, sore arms, boosted self-esteem and schoolwide recognition for the teen. “My name got in the morning bulletin, that was cool,” she said.
