Donations Still Make July 4 A Hit In Kailua

Kailua’s 62th annual July 4 Parade gets under way at 10 a.m. next Friday on the theme of “Hau’oli La Hanau (Happy Birthday), America.”

Judges will have an eyeful of 50 or more marching units, floats, churches, clubs, armed forces, beauty queens, scouts and sports teams to evaluate on their patriotic look, fortified by music from the Royal Hawaiian Band, Kailua Pops Orchestra, the Celtic Pipes & Drums and U.S. Marine Corps Band. The two-hour parade starts at Kainalu Elementary School and moves down Kainalu Drive to Kailua Intermediate School.

Chevron service station owner Jack Richardson, a longtime Kailua business activist, is grand marshal for 2008. Organizers Linda Goldstein and Ray Sweeney urge viewers of both the parade and evening fireworks to come early, car pool, walk or ride their bikes. Police also will close some side streets prior to both events.


The fireworks show begins at 8 p.m. off of Kailua Beach Park, preceded at 7:45 by an aerial acrobatics show. Clear Channel Communications leads the list of business sponsors for the 10-minute, $45,000 display. Before the parade, the barbecue and the beach this Fourth of July, Windward residents can get a healthy start at the Bill Emerson Memorial Epilepsy Foundation Freedom Run/Walk.


The 5K run, 10K run and 1-mile walk begins at 7 a.m. July 4 at Kailua High School. The first male and female finisher will receive trophies, and age-class finishers get ribbons. The ceremony, prize drawings and food will be available for all participants after the runs.

Entry fees are $25 to $30 depending on the time of entry. Applications are available at the Epilepsy Foundation office or online at www.hawaiiepilepsy.com or www.Active.com.
