There is hope for Haiti yet, and it’s coming from fellow island-dwellers.

The missionary group of the Kaneohe 2nd Ward of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints heeded the call of church president Thomas S. Monson to help the people affected by the earthquake disaster in Haiti. On Jan. 18, a church group of eight adult and children marched in the Martin Luther King Jr. parade in Waikiki, using hand trucks with lined garbage cans and fish nets to collect donations along the route. The group collected approximately $3,700 from spectators in the one-hour walk, and they donated the money to the Hawaii Red Cross for the Haiti relief effort.

Marchers included Charles Naumu, Julia Naumu, Elijah Ohai, Kaleilani Ohai, Lauryn Ohai, Sabian Ohai, George Poliahu and Ivy Torres.

Charles Naumu, ward mission leader and organizer of the fundraiser, said he was extremely pleased with the effort’s outcome. “These folks are not the well-to-do business folks or the well-to-do philanthropists,” he pointed out. “These are just average people on the street watching a parade.

The church is no stranger to donations of the heart. Two months ago members collected $2,500 at Kahuku football games and donated all funds to the International Red Cross to help victims of the recent tsunami in Samoa and typhoon in the Philippines.

The worldwide LDS membership has shipped three plane loads of aid - totaling nearly 225,000 pounds - to Haiti, including food, medical supplies, tents, water filtration bottles, blankets, newborn kits, wheelchairs, first aid kits and other items. Two more flights were scheduled for early February, and additional flights are in the planning stages. The church has also partnered with CARE, United Airlines and Islamic Relief USA to provide transportation, and three truckloads of relief supplies have also arrived in Haiti with supplies the church procured in the Dominican Republic.

Here in Hawaii, donors can call in donations to the Hawaii Red Cross at 739-8109, go online at www.hawaiiredcross.org or mail donations to American Red Cross, Hawaii State Chapter, 4155 Diamond Head Road, Honolulu, HI 96816. To direct it specifically to the Haiti relief effort, please indicate so on the check or when you call.
