The St. Ann’s Class of 1958 will celebrate its 50th anniversary Oct. 18 and 19 on the Kaneohe campus.

The parochial school dates back to 1841, and although the high school closed in 1969, its first graduating class remains close. Reunion coordinator Catherine Kozuki Johnson lives in Birmingham, Ala., and is excited to return for this special event.

“I feel that, as the first graduating class, this is a special occasion, and we want to treat it as such,” Johnson said. “At our 40th class reunion, there was an atmosphere of camaraderie never experienced in high school, and we look forward to more of the same.”

The Classes of 1959 through 1961 - and any spouse or friend, along with anyone who attended St. Ann’s during this time but did not graduate - also are invited to attend the Mass and dinner Oct. 18 and an all-day potluck picnic at Kahana Bay boat ramp the next day. The Mass will begin at 6 p.m., with a memorial service immediately following to honor classmates who have died. A buffet dinner will be served in the school cafeteria.

“Our sophomore teacher, Sister Joan Francis (Uhlen), cannot be with us at this time as she is too ill to make the trip from New York,” Johnson explained,“so we are videotaping each alumni for her.”

The evening is dedicated to socializing and reminiscing on days past, before Windward Mall - when places like Harada’s Store and Honey’s were the hot spots.

“Having Maryknoll teachers set us apart from other schools,” recalled Johnson, “because our teachers were firmly rooted in their beliefs and tried to pass that along to us. Our classes were very small, and everyone knew each other.

Each alumnus should bring mementos and photos to share. Admission is $65 and the deadline to register is Oct. 13. Proceeds from the reunion will be used to start an alumni association.
