Kailua Historical Society and Ahahui Malama I ka Lokahi team up to conduct their annual Kawainui/Maunawili Historic Tour from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday, starting from Ulupo Heiau by the Windward YMCA.

Guides are naturalist and longtime marsh advocate Chuck Burrows and Maunawili resident Paul Brennan, who is a cultural anthropologist.

The men will show participants the first historic settlements in Maunawili and end at the Queen’s Retreat and Kukapoki Heiau. Nalani Olds will share the origin of the queen’s song, Aloha Oe, and why the two oldest historic frame buildings in Windward Oahu need to be protected and restored.

The structures are on Luana Hills Country Club land owned by Honolulu Rapid Transit, the business arm of the Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Foundation. According to Burrows, they have suffered from “benign neglect” over the years, in addition to vandalism.

“We have tried to communicate our concerns to the HRT executive director and directors to no avail,” Burrows said, noting that the company originally bought the 1,000-plus acres to develop farming estates, not run a golf course.

“We want HRT to become responsible for their actions regarding Hawaiian cultural sites and the environment.”
