Set for 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. this Saturday on the Windward Community College campus, Windward Ho’olaulea 2009 has pulled together all parts of the community to celebrate E Pu Like Kakou (Let’s Come Together as One).

And adding a job fair to the mix of food, music and crafts has been a surprisingly good move, according to Michael Moser, who works on career and workforce development at WCC.

“(Employers) are flooded with applications,” he said,“so I was pleasantly surprised that they came out. They all rose to the occasion and are showing compassion for the unemployed.”

The job fair will pack 28 businesses and agencies into the Hale Akoakoa atrium from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Potential employers range from government and education to fast food and finance.

The Great Lawn stage will ooze with area talent, along with the aloha that local groups have for the WCC venue.

“As a homegrown Kahaluu/Kaneohe band, we are always excited about playing for the hometown folks,” said 1990 Castle High graduate Kevin Chang of Kupa’aina. “It always becomes a reunion of sorts and constant reminder of how pa’a (solid) our roots are.”

In the lineup are Kupuna O Koolau at 10:15 a.m., Pila Nahenahe at 11:15, Mailani at 12:15 p.m., Hawaii Loa at 1:15, Kupa’aina at 2:15, Kupaoa at 3:15, Halau Hula O Napunahelenapua at 4:15, Holunape at 5:15, West Side Story cast and Hawaii Music Institute at 6:15, Brother Noland at 7:15 and Ledward Kaapana at 8:15.

Kaneohe Business Group, which coordinates the event with WCC, will run a trade show featuring three local businesses or agencies every two hours from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Families also can enjoy nearly 60 craft booths and exhibits, rides, a book sale, white elephant sale, silent auction, college program booths, art, games, demonstrations, face painting, etc.

Major sponsors are Ameron Hawaii and HECO, and event proceeds will go into the college’s scholarship fund.
