The Kailua Chamber of Commerce has Independence Day covered - on land, sea and in the air.

On the ground is the parade: 78 units - including 20 politicians - have signed up for the annual parade, which begins at 10 a.m. Tuesday (July 4) on Kainalu Drive at Omao Street and proceeds down Kainalu to Kailua District Park.

Five bands, including one from New South Wales, New Zealand, are set to play, and Kailua’s own bird lady, DorothyRose Babineau, will be grand marshal for the march, which has the theme “The Spirit of Kailua.” Carrying out that theme with be the Royal Hawaiian Band, the Marine Corps band, a “Twistacular” baton troupe, antique and custom cars, clowns and much more.

In the air is the seventh annual Twilight Air Show, featuring veteran pilots Hank Bruckner of Kaneohe and Clint Churchill of Kailua. Their 30-minute aerobatics show begins at 6 p.m. off of Kailua Beach Park. Churchill plans 28 different maneuvers in his German-built Extra 300L. A former fighter pilot with the Air National Guard, he’s logged 3,900 hours of flight time and loves the chance to push his little plane to the edge.

“I enjoy flying the plane to its capability,” said Churchill, who chairs the Campbell Estate board of trustees for his day job. “It can do any maneuver known to man,“such as the Lomcovok - an insane end-over-end tumble from the sky. And what does his wife Suzy think of her soaring spouse? “She understands my need to do it,” he said, chuckling.

Over the sea, Kailua’s gift to the national holiday concludes with the fireworks show, starting at 8 p.m. from a floating barge in Kailua Bay. The show is sponsored by the chamber, along with Ace Hardware, McKenna Motors, Castle Medical Center and Clear Channel Communications.

According to parade chairman Mike Stott, the fireworks show will conclude in time for pyrotechnic fans to head over to the Marine base for the 10 p.m. fireworks show at BayFest 2006, which explodes over Kaneohe Bay.

For more information, call Stott at 254-1515.
