The grass-roots effort is on again to raise more than $50,000 for the July 4 Kailua fireworks show.

“Summer in Kailua is not summer without the Fourth of July fireworks and the parade,” declared Brook Gramann, who is spearheading the Kailua Fireworks Committee drive.

As of press time, a month before the event, donations were at 25 percent, or $18,000.“Donations have been slow,“admitted Gramann, a Kailua resident and business owner.“We’re making phone calls to the corporate sponsors, and we’re trying to reach out to the local community as well.

“Donate in the stores when you’re shopping or donate online at www.kailuafireworks.com,“she said. Donation boxes have been in place at 80 percent of Kailua’s stores since mid-May.

Kailua Chamber of Commerce and Kaneohe Ranch merchants are supportive, she added, and Kailua Shopping Center hosted an awareness rally June 5, giving away shave ice while encouraging donations.

The town’s 2009 fireworks show had been canceled because of the lack of funding a few months prior to the holiday, but when Gramann and her friends learned about it on June 10, they launched an ambitious fund drive. The community responded with enough money to make it happen and keep alive a tradition that dates back to 1948.
