Windward Ford dealer Mike McKenna, 77, is taking his latest national award in stride.

“It’s a reflection of our entire staff’s commitment to delivering the best customer experience possible,” he said, cigar in hand, baseball cap firmly settled on his head.

His Kailua dealership is among the top 10 percent in the country to earn the 2009 President’s Award from Ford Motor Co. for its sales, service and dedication to satisfying customers.

The secret, revealed general manager Jim Simington, is this: “When you buy a car from Windward Ford, you join the family.” That includes 75 employees, McKenna, and his daughter Michael (that’s right, Michael), who handles customer care.

McKenna moves more carefully now while recovering from a serious fall, but inside his huge-yet-cozy Cape Cod-style quarters, dogs named Hana still wag their tails by the popcorn stand, and mementos crowd the walls, thanking him for years of community gifts.

He made Project Grad a hit for years by giving away a car for high attendance. In another promotion, he gave $100 to a school for each new-car sale, amassing $1 million for the schools. An ex-Marine, he recently gave a car to the drivers ed program on base.

McKenna still comes to work daily and takes pride in Ford’s strides in national and local sales.
