The American Association of School Librarians has listed Kailua Elementary School’s library as one of the top 35 Outstanding School Libraries in the nation, and it will honor the school personally next week on campus.

“Librarians always have had that old stigma (of being very rigid and constantly hushing students),” said Kailua Elementary’s library media specialist Darren Tanaka. “But school libraries and librarianship have changed radically in the last couple decades. They are meant to enhance and help develop a student’s thought process.”

A 30-student computer lab, digital audio studio, visual media studio and a speech festival practice station are some of the resources Kailua maintains, expanding on learning techniques for students and teachers. The library also facilitates aquaponics, hydroponic and robotic LEGO projects to enable students to join outside competitions.

AASL president Nancy Everhart called the award program a way to spotlight models of exceptional librarian-ship, highlighting the roles librarians take on as reading advocates, information literacy specialists, technologists and instructional partners.

“We do not wait for students to come to us,” explained Tanaka, a former middle school science teacher. “We are actively plugged into the school curriculum, helping the kids build, create, explore and share their ideas.”

Everhart will present Kailua Elementary with a plaque Sept. 23, during its literacy-focused Family Night. The program begins with dinner at 5 p.m. and award presentation, followed by parent-child activities. The finale is a library theme song, led by Everhart.
