Each year, entire communities throughout the U.S. join the fight against cancer through the American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life. And Kailua always answers the call in a big way.

Last year’s Kailua Relay for Life raised $100,000 for ACS research and local programs, attracting 66 teams - 14 more teams than the previous relay.

“We would love to surpass that this year,” said chairman Briggs Christie. “There are still sponsorship opportunities available.”

This year’s theme,“Celebrate, Remember and Fight Back,” centers on prevention and education from 3 p.m. July 12 to 7 a.m. July 13 at Kailua Beach Park. Besides the relay itself, there will be a wellness area with information on early detection and healthy lifestyles. Guest speakers include Hawaii’s Flo Pell, a nationally recognized inspirational speaker and member of the Heroes of Hope cancer survivor group.

“This year because we are winning the battle, we are spending less time entertaining and more time educating,” said Christie. “Last year 560,000 people in the U.S lost their lives to cancer. Half of those were preventable and 158,000 of those are directly attributed to cigarette smoking. So these are the messages that we will be giving as part of the relay.”

Entertainment includes hula and Hawaiian music, plus guitarist and vocalist Paul Hermosa.

“The rest of the evening is a series of events that honor cancer survivors and honor those we’ve lost to cancer,” said Christie. “And there is also a dinner that we’ve planned for cancer survivors” (provided free of charge by Kailua’s Big City Diner and Lucy’s Grill & Bar). Interested survivors can register at 262-8188.

The relay teams take turns walking or running laps, trying to keep at least one member on the track at all times.
