Gimme a “C!” Gimme an “O!” Gimme a ... Congratulations! And good luck to Kalaheo’s varsity cheerleaders, who will compete at the UCA National Cheerleading Championship in February.

The squad also will leave its mark in Kalaheo’s record books: This is the first time Mustang cheerleaders have entered a national competition.

“It felt exhilarating to know that we left (UCA Cheer Camp) with so much accomplished in three days,” exclaimed senior captain Jori Gorgonio. “I am excited to be a part of this team right now, to have the opportunity to compete at this level, to represent my school.”

Kimberly Yamamoto, junior co-captain, added,“I was overwhelmed when we were announced as one of the teams getting a bid. It makes me feel good to know that we worked so hard for it — we made it!”

Head coach Candice Lee credited the cheerleaders’ tremendous dedication and talent: “The girls have been working very hard on their stunting, tumbling and skills to be at their very best for Nationals. We know we have a lot to prove and want to go and represent Hawaii and Kalaheo High School with pride.” Lee keeps the jumps high and the pep higher with help from assistant coaches Pili Ellis and Kawehi Kamalamalama and adviser Rose Richardson.

At the state cheerleading competition Dec. 2, the girls placed sixth in the medium division. To perfect their routines, Lee said the squad has been practicing five days a week but will get some time off for the holidays.

Come January, they switch back to a more stringent schedule to get amped up for the February cheer-off.

“It’s good to know that, for the first time, our team has accomplished more than ever before,” said senior captain Stephanie Lozada.“It’s great that our squad achieved this by working hard together.”

To pay for the much anticipated trip to Orlando Fla., a fundraiser of Huli Huli chicken is planned for Jan. 12 at the school. Tickets may be purchased from any cheerleader, and Lee said they will accommodate some walk-ups. Donations will be gratefully accepted, she added.
