Kualoa Ranch is a natural fit for the Windward side’s next Sunset event, and organizers are promising a weekend that will “get everybody happy again.”

Sunset at the Ranch is set for 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Oct. 7 and 8 on the ranch grounds with plenty of parking, eating, music, crafts, movies and fun for all ages.According to chairman Wayne Panoke,it’s definitely time to help lighten the load, especially for Hauula area families who have endured so much trauma from flooding this year.

“It’s a great community effort, and we expect 200 to 300 volunteers to be there making it happen,” he said.“We especially want to thank John Morgan, who is also extending a 15 percent discount on ranch activities to people attending the event.”

Striving for a homegrown feel, Panoke’s committee chose feature films familiar to the area. Showtime is 7 each night. Saturday’s double feature leads off with Jeremy Spear’s Polynesian Power. Narrated by The Rock with plenty of island music, it traces the careers of Samoan and Tongan football players.“It’s a great movie,” said Panoke. “It shows that if you really want something, work for it and you’ll get there.”

The second Saturday film is Escape from Atlantis, filmed at Kualoa Ranch with many local actors. Al Harrington and other cast members will meet with the crowd following the screening. Sunday’s film is Mighty Joe Young. Need we say more?

Live entertainment starts at noon each day, with Simplisity, youth groups and hula halau in a lineup that was still being finalized at press time.A marketplace with crafts and local produce is planned, along with a keiki village of fun, including a mini circus of inflatables and a rock-climbing wall. Hawaiian cultural demonstrations will feature wood-carving and poi pounding.

An exhibit tent with a drug-prevention theme is open for community and non-profit groups. Signups, however, are due by Sept. 25 to Gordon Miyamoto at 235-7747.

Uncle Bobo’s Ribs, Hawaiian Island Meals, B & J Diner, Tammy Ho Smith Catering, Hakipuu Learning Center and the Windward Community College culinary students and Ku Pono Hawaiian Club will serve up food favorites to the hungry crowd.

Craft vendors are still welcome to sign up, and residents are invited to the remaining planning meetings at 7 p.m.Sept.26 and Oct. 3 at the ranch. Oahu Civil Defense will direct parking, and a $2 donation per car will be requested for Castle High’s Project Graduation.

For more information, call Panoke at 753-9773.
