Native Americans are counting on events in Windward Oahu to raise funding support for their annual Pow Wow next month in Honolulu.

Navajo singer and comedian James Bilagody will perform Sunday at Kualoa Ranch at a benefit for the American Indian Pow Wow Association. A tournament Oct. 4 at Bay View Golf Park also will support the 33rd annual intertribal Pow Wow (set for Oct. 6-7 at Thomas Square).

The Kualoa Ranch program begins at 5 p.m. Sept. 16 with a spaghetti dinner, silent auction and the 7:30 p.m. concert by Bilagody, which will include his traditional hand-drum music, acoustic guitar and comedy.

?Navajos have a distinctive style, and it’s a whole new sound for the people of Hawaii,” said Wendy Schofield-Ching, owner of Native Winds Gift Gallery and Craft Supply. “The Navajos believe the drum is the heartbeat of the earth. Lots of hand-drum songs are love songs. I hope people will also enjoy his comedy, which should appeal to everyone.” Schofield-Ching has the $25 tickets at Native Winds, 1152 Koko Head Ave. in Kaimuki, or call 734-8018. Tickets also are available at Sacred Treasures at Aloha Tower Marketplace.

The Pow Wow’s 2007 theme is “Honoring Our Native Veterans” and will include a tribute to the Navajo Code Talkers. It’s free and features dancing, singing, arts and crafts and freshly cooked frybread.

Based in Arizona, Bilagody’s roots are in the Towering House Clan (through his mother), the Bitter Water Clan (hisfather), the Salt Clan (maternal grandparents) and the Zuni Edgewater Clan (paternal grandparents). He was a nominee for the Native American Music Awards’ Best Pop/Rock Album, and also for Best Traditional Recording. Bilagody performed at the Coconino County Fair in Flagstaff, Ariz., Labor Day weekend before coming to Hawaii. Next stop, Greenwich, Conn.

The Kaneohe golf tournament has a four-person shotgun format, starting at 8 a.m. Oct. 4. Teams and individual golfers are welcome to sign up by calling Stacy at 235-2045. Fee is $50 including golf cart.
