Tickets are selling fast to see the 69 students who will perform in Mulan Jr. this weekend at Paliku Theatre. The show is the finale for the Paliku Academy of Performing Arts summer course for students in grades 5 to 11 on the Windward Community College campus.

Since June 9, the young students have been honing their vocal, dancing and acting skills at the college - five hours a day, five days a week - leading up to Mulan Jr.

Showtimes are 7:30 p.m. Friday, and 2 and 7:30 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. For tickets, call 235-7310.

Jasmine Yoshikawa plays the title role of a woman who disguises herself as a man so her father will not have to be a soldier. Matthew Mazzella is Mushu the dragon, who helps Mulan to return home safely.

Lesson One is a song that I really like because it talks about being a soldier and fighting,” explained director John-Paul Tai, “and Mulan shares that some softness can also achieve results with one muscle and one mind.

Reflections is another great song that is most famous because it was in the movie and the play version of the show. In this song Mulan shows her heart, and shares about her wish to find where she fits in society. I think a lot of people will be able to relate to that.”

Another show stopper, he said, is I’ll Make a Man Out Of You,featuring 13 guys using bamboo sticks singing, and doing calisthenics.

“Parents have been so supportive of the program,” added Tai, a 2000 Kamehameha Schools graduate and product of Ron Bright’s Castle Performing Arts Center.

“They have gone above and beyond the call of duty in helping - especially with costumes.”
