The annual Waimanalo Christmas Parade, “Have a Safe Merry Christmas,” is set for 9 a.m. Saturday, shutting down the highway for two hours, as the parade travels from Hihimanu and Humuniki streets to Waimanalo Beach Park.

Parade coordinator Andrew Jamila expects around 30 units and more than 100 marchers this year, including Hui Malama O Ke Kai, the Royal Hawaiian Band and the Marine color guard. Mayor Peter Carlisle, City Councilman Ikaika Anderson and state Rep. Chris Lee also are expected, along with Santa Claus and grand marshal Wallace Nitta of Rocky Road Products.

The march will be dedicated to Waimanalo resident Victor Hoonani Opiopio, known as radio personality Krash Kealaha, who died Nov. 25. A celebration of his life is planned from noon to 5 p.m. at the park, Jamila said.

“It’s also a great parade for the children because there will be lots of candy being passed out,” he added. “They’ll love the classic cars and hot rod boats too.”

Waimanalo Construction Coalition, Shima’s Market, the city and its community policing team co-sponsor the march. For details or to help out, call 690-2443.
