Castle Medical Center again will give health care a good dose of spirituality by hosting the eighth annual Faith Community Nurse Training from 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Jan. 28-Feb. 1.

During the weeklong program, participants learn to serve as faith community nurses, or parish nurses, who meld professional nursing practices with faith-based healing and wellness.

“Every year is unique in that the class develops in response to the needs and skills of the participants,” explained Sue Pignataro, faith community nurse coordinator at Castle. “The core information is consistent, but the learning process is always different. The sharing and bonding that goes on during the week is truly a gift and a blessing to all involved.”

This year, Puget Sound Parish Nurse Health Ministries program director Carol Story as well as local experts Liz Nelson and Cynthia Taylor will lead discussions on organizing and providing health screenings, dealing with domestic violence and educating patients to be wise health-care consumers. Most importantly, they will demonstrate the importance of the spiritual aspect of health and wholeness for individuals, families and their churches.

“As the health care system continues to struggle with lack of financial support and human resources, the faith community will be looked upon more and more for assistance,” Pignataro explained. “Health is reflected through social, economic, physical, emotional and spiritual realms. No other institution is better suited to support others in these realms than the church.
